Emotional Abuse - Boss Is A Tyrant

About ten months ago I began working at a new company, my boss being a VP and incidentally, the corporation's major cash cow. In addition to being the CFO, she also runs Human Resources.

I’m an executive, work in the financial area, and have always prided myself in doing a superior job. But here’s the problem: my boss has major anger management problems, with frequent outbursts of yelling at me, throwing out cruel sarcasm; she is an out-of-control tyrant. My nerves are completely shot by now; I've tried approaching her in private and requesting (respectfully) that she not yell at me and rip me apart. For this, I got cutting sarcasm back. I can't go to HR since she runs it! I tried going to the person she reports to and was told, “Don’t make waves." The company tolerates her terrible behavior because she generates so much financially.

What is the best thing to do in my position? I can't continue to work for this person - I'm such an emotional wreck I'm already on a 30-day Disabilty Leave. What are my best options? Resign? Leave on Permanent Disability? Get fired (she'd fire me instantly if I once more asked her not to scream at me.)? How can I get Unemployment payments when I leave the company? And not hurt myself in future job interviews? I'm afraid that if I file a harassment claim, and other companies find out (in an interview) - I will never again get hired. What can I do? What should I do?

Answers:

If you are already on a 30 day nervous breakdown leave, resigning due to intolerable working conditions it is basically a "constructive discharge", and the granting of Unemployment benefits is probably assured. Try consulting an attorney skilled in this area of law for a low cost fee initial consultation. Benefits, even if granted are not at the 100% level though?

Employers who treat employees like garbage make me sick to my stomach. They have to show how much POWER they have over someone.

Try geting a job where a friend works so the application/hiring process will run smoother than an unfamiliar position.IF you file harassment charges and are discriminated against, including termination, that is illegal.

IF you are seeking employment it is unlawful probably for that employer to tell a prospective employer you are suing them for harassment. That is MALICE to specifially blackball you.

If you feel you are being knocked on by the old employer, here is one company who poses as a prospective employer to see what an old employer is saying about you. IF they give a reference outside what the law permits, bingo, you got em!!!
