Having built connections and a sturdy reputation, Yang managed his business, DinTaiFung, with little difficulty. When they had accumulated modest savings, Yang and his wife bought a small store on Xinyi Road. DinTaiFung's Xinyi main restaurant still operates at this location today.
When canned cooking oil hit the market in the early eighties, traditional oil shops received a heavy blow, and DinTaiFung was no exception. Taking the advice of a friend,Yang converted half of his shop to a restaurant, where he sold steamed soup dumplings and desserts. Soon, the restaurant side of the store took over the entire business.
