The best travel experience I have had is Vancouver, Canada. It is a place that has a slow place that people are kind and not in a hurry. I have been to a few countries, but it impressed me because I probably stayed there longer, so that I got to know it more. I knew many classmates because I went there for learning English and I stayed in an English institute. My classmates and I went to travel together on the weekend.

First, for safety, I paid for the picking fee for asking someone to take care of me and to take me to my host family where I would stay for one month. It was the first time I saw snow. I was surprised and felt very happy to touch snow that I hadn’t seen before.

Second, I stayed there for one month, so I got a lot of time to get together with my classmates, compared with staying for ten days in California. My classmates who are from different countries, such as Korea, Japan and Italy went with me to visit China town. We chatted a lot and shared different cultures. The time was peaceful and the classmates have always been friendly.

Third, the host daughter took me to a night club. I got drunk because I drank too fast. I couldn’t stand up by myself. The event scared me actually, but I still had fun. I like to dance and I danced there a lot.

Finally, the institute, Intrax, arranges a lot of English courses for students. My English really has improved a lot. Especially, I liked the pronunciation class where the teacher would correct everyone’s pronunciation carefully. Anyway, it was the first time I went to another country and I took a plane by myself. I hadn’t taken an international airplane before. Everything interested me indeed. I really had a great time at that moment.

Wall Street 2 (Money never sleeps)

I chose this topic because of the topic in the text book. I know this is a very popular movie. It has had two versions released. I bought this movie from a DVD shop. I think that it’s a great movie. Actually, I do not understand the whole movie. I guess that is because I do not understand stock very well. So I do not understand why the mentor of the lead character committed suicide in the subway.

In the movie, the male lead character has a girlfriend. He admires the girl friend’s father, Michael Douglas’ Gordon Gekko, who is good at making money, such as stock. However, her father is trying to cheat him. Her father is trying to get closer to her. I love the scene very much. Her father is very tender and he pretends that he loves his daughter deeply. I trust the scene at that moment but it is fake. It is a dishonest way to get her money from the bank, where he stole it from, before entering jail.

The dishonesty of Wall Street is discussed in the movie because the father cheated his daughter out of a lot of money.

The last TV program , ‘The Fierce Wife’ I saw

It is a welcome TV program, “The Fierce Wife” which talked about having an affair. I know about it from my boy friend. We watched it together and discussed it as well. The female leader, Ann and the male leader, Wisely, lived together and had a warm family. One day, Ann’s daughter-in-law, Way, came back from the U.S. and stayed with them. So, the male leader and Way, the mistress, loved each other. That means Wisely had an affair. Later, Ann and Wisely got divorced. For a while, Wisely lost his job and he relied on his ex-wife. So they, three people lived together.

However, the new couple were not happy actually. Way went back to the U.S. Wisely asked his ex-wife to get together. But Ann had changed her personality after divorcing with her ex-husband. So Ann didn’t accept his request. At the end, Ann got closer with her male friend, Blue, who encouraged her and helped her to be more confident. The director didn’t tell us if they got together at the end, so that it is an open ending. But I guess they really got together finally. At least, she didn’t agree to be together with her ex-husband.

In my opinion, it is not a great idea to be a mistress. That will destroy others’ marriage. I do not think that we can have a happy life if we really destroy others’ marriage. I agree that we can love a person who we like, but I still think it is a bad idea to fall in love with a person who already has a partner. What do you think of this?

Rules for English Composition

During a break from reading my students’ term papers this week, I sat down to peruse the text of the proposed draft constitution of the European Union. Consider this a selfless act of dedication to journalistic inquiry. In 27 years of teaching I have seen some dreadful grammar, but the EU draft matches the worst I’ve ever encountered. I realize the document is meant to be multi-lingual, but in reading it I wondered if the authors had invented a whole new dialect of English.

Not that I have any right to judge. To be honest with you, Dave Black speaking on English composition is a bit like Nero speaking on fire safety. Growing up in Hawaii I remember once asking my High School English teacher, “Why should I study English? I’m not planning on going to England.” What do you expect from a guy whose mother tongue was pidgin?
But back to the EU constitution. I’ll bore you with only two examples of what seems to me to be fairly ludicrous diction:

The Union shall have exclusive competence for the conclusion of an international agreement when its conclusion is provided for in a legislative act of the Union, is necessary to enable the Union to exercise its competence internally, or affects an internal Union act.
Under the principle of subsidiary, in areas which do not fall within its exclusive competence the Union shall act only if and insofar as the objectives of the intended of the intended action cannot be sufficiently achieved by the Member States, either at central level or at regional and local level, but can rather, by reason of the scale or effects of the proposed action, be better achieved at Union level.

Again, who am I to judge? I’m no expert in English style and diction. Nor am I a linguist or a scholar of the history of language. I have dabbled a bit in Greek linguistics, mostly to try to convince my seminary students that the language of the New Testament has architectural precision. I am wary of prescriptive grammars that set out standards of “correct” and “incorrect” usage. Professional linguists argue—correctly, in my opinion—that many usages censured by self-styled grammarians are in fact perfectly reasonable, whether on historical grounds, logical grounds, or both. If you don’t believe me, just see how we translated John 18:4 in the International Standard Version.

There are several writing guides I recommend to my students. H. W. Fowler’s 700-page volume titled Modern English Usage is perhaps the best. This book includes every conceivable stylistic point, arranged alphabetically, and written in an informal tone. Almost every entry has illustrative quotations from real life. However, Fowler is probably too sophisticated for non-native speakers and rank beginners.

Years ago I assembled a list of 20 “rules for English composition” for my students. These are not original to me (a longer list may be found here), but I do ask my students to follow them punctiliously. I offer them to you for your solemn consideration.

1. Always avoid alliteration.

2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.

3. Avoid clichés like the plague.

4. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.

5. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.

6. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary.

7. Foreign words and phrases are hardly apropos.

8. Never generalize.

9. Comparisons are as bad as clichés.

10. Don’t be redundant or use more words than necessary; it’s highly superfluous.

11. Be more or less specific.

12. One-word sentences? Eliminate.

13. The passive voice is to be avoided.

14. Even if a metaphor sings, it should be derailed.

15. Who needs rhetorical questions?

16. Employ the vernacular.

17. Analogies are like feathers on a snake.

18. Contractions aren’t proper.

19. Eliminate quotations; as Emerson once said: “I hate quotations.”

20. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.

These rules are much simpler than those found in Fowler. I tell my students to read them daily and perhaps even keep a copy under their pillow. One never knows when one might need to be able to write English good.

In this way, one can also learn colloquial expressions and jargon besides practicing listening ability.

I.C.R.T. prepares various features of music at different times for a large audience. The types of music include are written in simple, colloquial English, people can learn English by listening to words of the songs. In addition, people can request the playing of their favorite songs by telephone or postcard, so they can listen to songs they want to learn.

Many people listen to the radio as an amusement, but radio broadcasts can also be a tool for language learning. I.C.R.T. can be a valuable resource for English language learning because one can listen not only to news, weather reports and discussions on current events, but also to English language songs.
